Joe Biden faces mutiny? Officials rebel against him on Israel-Hamas war

Four hundred people working for the U.S. government, from different departments like the State Department, White House, National Security Council, and Justice Department, wrote a letter. They don't agree with how President Joe Biden is handling the Israel-Hamas war and want him to call for a cease-fire.

The letter, first mentioned by the New York Times, urges President Biden to act quickly. It asks him to demand a stop to the fighting, release Israeli hostages, free detained Palestinians, restore basic services like water and electricity, and send enough humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.

President Biden, along with leaders from other countries, has resisted calls for a cease-fire in Gaza. They argue that stopping the fighting would only help Hamas terrorists. Instead, Biden's team is pushing for temporary breaks in the conflict for humanitarian reasons, and Israel has agreed to that.

Meanwhile, the U.S. is imposing more sanctions on Hamas, the group responsible for the recent attack on Israel. These new sanctions target not only Hamas but also their supporters in Iran. The U.S. Treasury Department says the sanctions aim to hit the Iranian backers, key Hamas officials, and the ways Iran supports both Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken points out that Iran, mainly through its Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, supports the terrorist activities of Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen adds that the U.S. will keep working with partners like the UK to prevent Hamas from getting funds to carry out their actions.
