US to Push China for a 'More Constructive Approach' Amid Israel-Hamas War

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will visit Washington late Thursday, a trip seen as paving the way for further high-level meetings between the United States and China.

The United States is planning to talk to China about a more positive way of dealing with issues. China's Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, is going to visit Washington soon. This visit will help set the stage for important meetings between the United States and China.

Why are they having these talks? It's because the United States wants China to be more helpful in dealing with the conflict between Israel and Hamas, and the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

The U.S. Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, will host Wang from October 26 to 28. They will discuss important matters. The White House's national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, will also have talks with Wang. They have met before in September and in May to discuss things like Russia's actions in Ukraine and the need for peace in the Taiwan Strait.

Even President Joe Biden might stop by to say hello to China's top diplomat. He has said that he's likely to meet with China's President Xi Jinping next month at an economic summit in San Francisco. This would be a big deal because Xi hasn't visited the United States since 2017.

The U.S. government believes that talking directly with China is the best way to deal with tough problems and make sure both sides understand each other. One of the issues they're going to talk about is stopping artificial intelligence from being used in nuclear decisions.

Also, the U.S. is asking China to use its influence with countries in the Middle East, like Iran, to prevent more attacks on Israel and the spread of the conflict with Hamas. Iran supports groups like Hamas, and the U.S. wants to make sure things don't get worse.

There are some big differences and problems between the United States and China, like the fentanyl crisis, technology issues, and security in different parts of the world. These are all things they need to figure out together.

In the South China Sea

The United States promised to help the Philippines if they are attacked, like they agreed to in a treaty from 1951. This promise came after a situation where Chinese ships blocked and bumped into two Filipino boats near Second Thomas Shoal on Sunday. Luckily, no one got hurt, but the Filipino coast guard ship and a navy supply boat were damaged.

The U.S. reassured the Philippines about their support in a call with the Philippine national security counterpart. They said that China's actions in the sea were dangerous and not allowed.

The United States is worried about China's military acting more aggressively in the East and South China Seas. They want to talk with China's military to avoid misunderstandings that could lead to conflict.

China says they own most of the South China Sea, but other countries also claim parts of it. China doesn't like U.S. ships and planes being in the area because they say it makes things less peaceful.

The Fentanyl Crisis

The U.S. wants China to help stop the chemicals that are used to make the dangerous drug fentanyl. They say China shouldn't use other problems as an excuse to avoid this issue.

Fentanyl is a drug that's causing a lot of deaths in the U.S., especially among younger people. The U.S. is working to stop illegal drugs from coming into the country and the opioid crisis.

A group from the U.S. government recently talked to Chinese leaders about the fentanyl problem. They asked China's President to work together to stop the chemicals used to make fentanyl. They think it's really important for China to help with this issue.

High-Level Meetings

The U.S. and China will have important meetings soon, but it doesn't mean they're going back to the way things were before. There used to be a big annual meeting called the China-U.S. Strategic and Economic Dialogue, but it was stopped by the Trump administration.

Now, they want to have more focused talks with China. They still want to communicate with China, but in a different way.
