Blinken Appeals to U.N. Security Council: Help Us Deter Iran
Beyond warning Iran to stay out of the intensifying war between Israel and Hamas, the U.S. is looking to recruit other nations to join its deterrence campaign.
The United States wants to prevent a war with Iran. They told Iran to stay out of the fighting between Israel and Hamas. The U.S. doesn't want the conflict to get worse. But if Iran or their friends attack U.S. soldiers or staff, the U.S. will protect its people quickly and firmly, said Secretary of State Antony Blinken at a meeting of the U.N. Security Council in New York City.
Blinken also asked other countries to join the U.S. in stopping Iran. He made it clear that not doing so could lead to serious consequences. He urged council members to tell Iran and its friends to stay out of the Israel-Hamas conflict.
The U.S. believes Iran is helping groups attack American military bases in Iraq and Syria. They're also concerned about attacks by Iranian-backed rebels in Yemen. The U.S. says it won't allow threats to its interests in the region to go unanswered.
The situation is complicated, especially with a potential ground invasion by Israel in Gaza. The U.S. is taking steps to protect its troops in the Middle East, like sending aircraft carriers and deploying defense systems.
So, to put it simply, the U.S. is asking the U.N. for support in keeping Iran out of the conflict and protecting its troops in the region.
