Pro-Trump lawyer accepts plea deal in Georgia ‘fake electors’ case

Kenneth Chesebro was facing seven felony charges related to plan to falsely certify that Trump won in 2020

A lawyer named Kenneth Chesebro, who supported former President Trump and was involved in a plan to fake electors in the 2020 election, has agreed to a plea deal in Georgia. This means he won't have to go to trial in the legal case related to Trump and 17 others in Fulton County.

In this last-minute agreement, Chesebro admitted to conspiring to file false documents. He will be on probation for five years, pay $5,000 in restitution, perform 100 hours of community service, and write an apology letter to the people of Georgia. Importantly, he has to provide any evidence he has and testify truthfully in court against his co-defendants, including Trump.

Another lawyer, Sidney Powell, also accepted a plea deal the day before Chesebro. This may have influenced his decision. Two days ago, he had turned down a plea offer from prosecutors.

Fifteen others, including Trump, are still set to face trial next year in a case brought by the Fulton County district attorney. Powell and Chesebro's cases were separated from the larger case because they requested a fast trial.

Chesebro played a significant role in Trump's efforts to challenge the 2020 election results. He wrote memos about creating fake pro-Trump electors in states where Trump lost, and he suggested that Vice President Mike Pence should step aside to avoid a conflict of interest during the election certification.

Chesebro's decision to cooperate with prosecutors could be damaging for Trump's lawyer Rudy Giuliani and attorney John Eastman, with whom he worked closely on the plan to challenge the election.

Chesebro was facing seven felony charges related to the plan to create fake electors to falsely claim that Trump had won the 2020 election. He accepted the plea deal just as his trial was about to start.

We have not received any comments from Chesebro's lawyers or the Fulton County district attorney's office yet.

Chesebro and Powell taking plea deals could strengthen the case against Trump, as they were both deeply involved in his efforts to stay in power and could provide new information in court.
