Off-duty pilot Joseph Emerson accused of trying to crash Alaska Airlines flight
An off-duty pilot, Joseph Emerson, has been accused of trying to crash an Alaska Airlines flight. He's charged with 83 counts of attempted murder. This happened while the plane was flying from Washington to California with 80 passengers on board.
Emerson was in the cockpit behind the captain and first officer. The flight was supposed to go to San Francisco but was redirected to Portland, Oregon. The situation was handled without problems, and Emerson was taken into custody.
Alaska Airlines stated that the off-duty pilot was in the jump seat of the cockpit and tried to interfere with the plane's engines. Crew members reported the incident to air traffic control.
Passengers on board were not aware of the crisis until the flight attendant announced that the plane needed to land immediately due to a "medical emergency." The situation was managed professionally.
Alaska Airlines ensured that all passengers could continue their journey on another flight. The case is being investigated by the Port of Portland Police Department and the FBI.
Emerson faces charges of attempted murder, reckless endangerment, and endangering an aircraft. He's in detention, and it's uncertain when he will be arraigned.
The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that this incident had no connection to current world events.
